Would you consider not getting married to your partner for an extra $10,000 per year? That is a very real question that high earning dual income couples can face. The issue has to do with how the US federal tax brackets are set up. At higher income levels the size of the tax brackets for a married household is not double that of a single earner.
I would like to think it is a commentary on how ridiculous our tax system currently is to even have someone think about something like this. The US tax system is often used to try and incentivize certain behaviors. I have no idea what they are trying to incentivize here.
Are those sheets shared above available? Thanks
I created a custom chatgpt to help with these calculations and then modified the tables manually in Google Sheets to make them look better.
I would link to the Custom GPT, but it just lies to you like 45% of the time in random ways.
Interesting, hadn't considered this. Though for a couple that makes $1.5M I think they'll survive if they had to pay another $11k :)
This was a massive waste of time
Thanks Tony. I appreciate the kind words.
Really well written post 😁 I just don’t see why people would not get married to save money when they’re already wealthy?
